Audeze LCD-5s Review: The Latest Evolution in the LCD Line

Audeze has long been a name synonymous with planar magnetic excellence, and the release of the LCD-5s marks another milestone in their storied LCD line. As the latest evolution, the LCD-5s promises to refine the already impressive formula of its predecessor, the LCD-5, with subtle yet meaningful improvements. In this review, we'll dive deep into the design, features, and sound signature of the LCD-5s to help you decide if it's the right headphone for your listening journey.

From the moment you unbox the LCD-5s, it's clear that Audeze has paid meticulous attention to detail. The headphones exude a premium feel, with a robust build that balances durability and comfort. But beyond the aesthetics, the real story lies in the acoustic engineering. Let's explore what makes the LCD-5s stand out in a crowded field of high-end headphones.

Design and Build Quality

The LCD-5s continues Audeze's tradition of using high-grade materials. The ear cups are crafted from a combination of aerospace-grade aluminum and a carbon fiber composite, which not only looks striking but also reduces overall weight. At approximately 420 grams, the LCD-5s is lighter than many of its planar magnetic peers, making it more comfortable for extended listening sessions. The suspension headband, similar to the one found on the LCD-4z, distributes weight evenly, and the leather ear pads provide a plush seal that enhances passive isolation.

A notable upgrade in the LCD-5s is the revised yoke mechanism, which allows for smoother adjustment and a more secure fit. The cable connectors are also improved, featuring a locking system that prevents accidental disconnection. While the LCD-5s is not a portable headphone per se, it feels sturdy enough for travel, especially when paired with a protective case.

• Aerospace-grade aluminum and carbon fiber construction
• Improved suspension headband for comfort
• Locking cable connectors for secure connection

Features and Technology

At the heart of the LCD-5s are Audeze's latest planar magnetic drivers, which have been fine-tuned to deliver even lower distortion and faster transient response. The drivers use a thinner diaphragm and a more powerful magnet array, resulting in improved detail retrieval and a more dynamic sound. The LCD-5s also incorporates Audeze's Fazor waveguides, which help control high-frequency diffraction for a smoother treble response.

One of the key features of the LCD-5s is its impedance of 14 ohms, which makes it relatively easy to drive compared to other high-end planars. This means you can enjoy the LCD-5s with a wide range of amplifiers, though a dedicated headphone amp like the Audeze The King MKII will unlock its full potential. The headphones also come with a high-quality cable, but for those who prefer aftermarket options, the MM-500 Extra Long Cable is a great choice for added flexibility.

• New planar magnetic drivers with lower distortion
• Fazor waveguides for smooth treble
• 14-ohm impedance for easy driving

Sound Quality

The sound signature of the LCD-5s is nothing short of spectacular. The bass is deep and authoritative, with excellent extension and control. Unlike some planars that can sound overly lean, the LCD-5s delivers a satisfying punch that will please bass enthusiasts without overwhelming the rest of the spectrum. The mids are lush and natural, making vocals and acoustic instruments sound incredibly lifelike. The treble is detailed and airy, with just the right amount of sparkle to keep things exciting without ever becoming harsh.

Soundstage and imaging are also top-tier. The LCD-5s presents a wide, holographic soundstage that places you in the center of the performance. Instrument separation is superb, allowing you to pick out individual elements in complex tracks with ease. Whether you're listening to a symphony or a rock band, the LCD-5s handles it all with finesse.

• Deep, controlled bass with excellent extension
• Natural and lush midrange
• Detailed treble with no harshness
• Wide soundstage and precise imaging

LCD-5s vs LCD-5: What's New?

The most common question is how the LCD-5s compares to the LCD-5. While both headphones share the same driver architecture, the LCD-5s introduces a few refinements. The most noticeable difference is in the tuning: the LCD-5s has a slightly warmer and more forgiving presentation, making it more versatile across different music genres. The bass is a touch more prominent, and the treble is slightly rolled off, which reduces listener fatigue over long listening sessions.

Another difference is the weight reduction. The LCD-5s is about 10% lighter than the LCD-5, which makes a significant difference in comfort. Additionally, the LCD-5s comes with a new ear pad design that improves seal and comfort. For those who already own the LCD-5, the upgrade may not be essential, but for new buyers, the LCD-5s offers a more refined and user-friendly experience.

Who Should Buy the LCD-5s?

The LCD-5s is aimed at audiophiles who demand the best in sound quality but also value comfort and practicality. It's an excellent choice for critical listening at home, but its relatively low impedance and moderate weight make it suitable for use with portable setups as well. If you're coming from a mid-range headphone, the LCD-5s will be a revelation, offering a level of detail and realism that is hard to match.

However, the LCD-5s is a significant investment, and it may be overkill for casual listeners. If you're on a budget, consider the LCD-1 Headphones, which offer a more affordable entry point into Audeze's sound. But if you're ready to take your listening to the next level, the LCD-5s is a worthy contender.

In conclusion, the Audeze LCD-5s is a remarkable achievement that builds on the strengths of the LCD-5 while addressing some of its shortcomings. With its refined sound, improved comfort, and thoughtful design, it's a top-tier choice for any serious audiophile. If you're in the market for a new flagship headphone, the LCD-5s deserves a spot on your shortlist. Explore the LCD-5s today and experience the evolution of sound.
