Audeze MM-100 Review: Are These Planar Headphones Worth It in 2026?

The Audeze MM-100 has been a topic of conversation since its release, and in 2026 it remains a compelling option in the planar headphone market. As part of Audeze's lineup, the MM-100 aims to deliver the brand's signature planar magnetic sound in a more accessible package. But does it live up to the hype? In this review, we'll dive deep into the MM-100's design, comfort, sound quality, and overall value to help you decide if these headphones deserve a spot on your desk or in your listening room.

Audeze is known for its high-end planar headphones, but the MM-100 was designed to be more affordable without sacrificing the core planar experience. Whether you're a music producer, a gamer, or an audiophile, the MM-100 promises a detailed, open sound that many have come to expect from the brand. Let's see if it delivers.

Design and Build Quality

The MM-100 features a sturdy yet lightweight construction, with a metal headband and yokes that feel durable. The ear cups are open-back, which allows for a natural soundstage but also means they leak sound and don't isolate much. The design is minimalist, with a focus on function over flash, which is typical for Audeze's professional-oriented products.

Comfort is a strong point for the MM-100. The ear pads are plush and generously sized, fitting around the ears without causing pressure points. The headband is well-padded, and the clamping force is moderate, making them suitable for long listening sessions. However, if you're looking to upgrade the ear pads for a different feel, Audeze offers a range of options, including the Euclid Silicone Eartip Set, which, while designed for in-ear models, shows the brand's commitment to customization.

• Lightweight aluminum construction
• Plush ear pads and padded headband
• Open-back design for a spacious sound

Sound Quality: The Planar Signature

The MM-100's sound signature is what sets it apart. As a planar magnetic headphone, it delivers fast transient response and low distortion, even at higher volumes. The bass is tight and well-defined, not bloated, which makes it excellent for genres that require precision, like electronic and classical music.

Mids are forward and detailed, making vocals and instruments sound natural and present. Highs are extended but never harsh, striking a balance that many headphones struggle to achieve. This makes the MM-100 a versatile performer across all music genres. For mixing and mastering, the MM-100 provides an honest representation of the audio, which is why many professionals gravitate toward it.

• Fast transient response and low distortion
• Natural mids and extended highs
• Accurate soundstage for critical listening

MM-100 vs. Other Planar Headphones

When comparing the MM-100 to other planars in its price range, it holds its own. It offers a more neutral tuning than some competitors, which can be a double-edged sword: some listeners prefer a more colored sound for enjoyment, but for mixing, neutrality is key. The MM-100 also benefits from Audeze's driver technology, which is often found in more expensive models.

If you're looking for a closed-back option for isolation, you might consider the Audeze LCD-4z, which is a premium closed-back planar with a different sound profile. However, the MM-100's open-back design provides a wider soundstage, which is often preferred for mixing. For a more portable option, the sine-dx-320962">SINE DX offers a similar planar sound in a lightweight on-ear design, but it lacks the MM-100's full-size comfort and soundstage.

• Neutral tuning ideal for mixing
• Wide soundstage compared to closed-back planars
• More affordable than flagship models like the LCD-4z

Accessories and Upgrades

The MM-100 comes with a standard cable, but if you're looking to upgrade your cable game, Audeze offers the MM-100 & LCD-S20 Cable - 1/4" Single-ended, which is a high-quality replacement that can improve durability and signal integrity. For those who want to take their MM-100 on the go, the Aluminum Travel Case for LCD-5, MM Series, LCD Series, Maxwell is a rugged option that protects your investment.

While the MM-100 doesn't require a dedicated amplifier, pairing it with a quality DAC/amp like the Deckard can unlock its full potential, providing more headroom and a cleaner signal. This is especially beneficial for critical listening and mixing sessions.

• Upgrade cables for improved durability
• Travel case for protection on the go
• Consider a dedicated amp like the Deckard for best performance

Who Should Buy the MM-100?

The MM-100 is ideal for audio professionals, producers, and mix engineers who need a reliable, neutral-sounding headphone for critical listening. It's also a great choice for audiophiles who appreciate the planar magnetic sound but don't want to spend flagship prices. However, if you need closed-back isolation for noisy environments, or if you prefer a more bass-heavy, consumer-tuned sound, you might want to look elsewhere.

For gamers, the MM-100 can be used with a separate microphone, as it lacks a built-in mic. If you're looking for a gaming headset with ANC and wireless convenience, the Maxwell 2 ANC Wireless Gaming Headset might be a better fit, offering Audeze's planar sound in a gaming-focused package.

• Best for mixing and mastering
• Great for critical listening at home
• Not ideal for noisy environments due to open-back design

In conclusion, the Audeze MM-100 is a standout planar headphone that offers exceptional sound quality and build at a reasonable price. While it may not be for everyone, those who prioritize accuracy and detail will find it a worthy investment. If you're ready to experience the planar magic, the MM-100 is a fantastic starting point.
